Insights on Entrepreneurship: Turki F. Al Rasheed Lectures at King Saud University Entrepreneurship Center

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia  2011  King Saud University welcomed distinguished guest speaker Turki F. Al Rasheed to its Entrepreneurship Center for an enlightening lecture focused on the burgeoning landscape of entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia.

In an engaging address to a diverse audience of aspiring entrepreneurs, faculty, and students, Al Rasheed emphasized the importance of innovation and the crucial role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in advancing the Saudi economy.

“Saudi Arabia’s recent initiatives aimed at bolstering SMEs reflect a strategic vision that is crucial for our economic future,” he stated. “As of now, SMEs account for 33% of the private sector’s contribution to GDP, highlighting their significance as drivers of economic growth and job creation.”

Al Rasheed discussed significant reforms initiated by the Saudi government, which include reducing the minimum capital requirement for starting a business from SR 500,000 to just SR 25,000. These changes have drastically simplified the business start-up process—from 13 procedures down to only 7—and have reduced the time required to launch a business from 39 days to an impressive 15 days.

“The transformation from a reliance on inherited wealth to a culture driven by innovation is essential. Although the oil sector contributes significantly to our GDP, it employs only 2% of the workforce,” he noted. “We must diversify our economy to create sustainable employment opportunities.”

Saudi Arabia currently ranks 11th globally in terms of the ease of doing business, with starting a business positioned at an impressive 13th place. This progress is particularly crucial given that half of the Saudi population is under the age of 20 and will soon enter the job market.

Al Rasheed stressed that entrepreneurship requires not only access to resources but also a commitment to ongoing education and engagement in chosen sectors. He expressed, “Entrepreneurs must not only possess the capability to launch and run SMEs but also demonstrate a keen interest and active participation in their respective fields.”

To facilitate a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship, Al Rasheed prepared an insightful PowerPoint presentation detailing the essential steps for starting a business in Saudi Arabia. Attendees were encouraged to jot down any questions during the presentation for further discussion.

As he concluded his remarks, Al Rasheed warmly noted, “The most valuable insights often come from those who have navigated the complexities of starting a business firsthand. Let us learn together, adapт and innovate for a brighter economic future.”
