The recently concluded Gulf Research Meeting (GRM) 2014 held at the Gulf Research Center, Cambridge University from 25-28 August 2014 was extremely successful. It was attended by dignitaries, scholars, professionals, academics, private and government institutions, decision-makers and graduate students from around the world.
The Gulf Research Meeting provides an academic environment in which to foster Gulf studies and to promote scholarly and academic exchange among scholars working in and/or having familiarity with the Gulf region – i.e. the countries of Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Its mandate is to identify issues of importance to the Gulf region and provide a basis for academic and empirical research into those fields.
Dr Turki Faisal Al Rasheed, Prof David Bryde and Dr Yusra Mouzughi directed workshop 13: Doctoral Symposium: Addressing the Sustainability Agenda in the GCC Countries , which was attended by a number of participants, from doctoral students and academics, and listening participants from various universities in the GCC and the world.
The Doctoral Symposium provided participants with a unique opportunity to interact with experienced academics and practitioners in the field, as well as fellow doctoral candidates, to discuss their ongoing research in the aspect of sustainability.
Dr Al Rasheed and his co-directors interacted with the presenters (participants) and audience, providing constructive advice and suggestions for moving their research forward to completion. Feedback was focused on opportunities beyond the doctoral study, including dissemination of the research and possible opportunities that impact the development of the sustainability agenda in the Gulf.
The 2014 Meeting builds on the success of the previous year’s – which will shortly see the publication of a book, provisionally titled Sustainable Development Challenges in the GCC – and the 2015 Meeting has already issued a call for workshop proposals: http://gulfresearchme eting.net/ .
