UA Outstanding Alumnus Awardee Delivers Keynote Address at UA Symposium on Arid Lands, Food Security and Health

The University of Arizona’s 2014 Outstanding Alumni Achievement awardee, Dr. Turki Faisal Al Rasheed, delivered the keynote address at the UA Symposium on Arid Lands, Food Security and Health on October 30, 2014 at the Tucson Marriott University Park.

T he symposium was co-organized by three UA colleges: College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, through the School of Middle Eastern & North African Studies (MENAS); College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, through the Global Institute for Strategic Agriculture in Drylands (GISAD); and the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.

The goal of the symposium was to illuminate and discuss the current critical challenges and some of the most promising sustainable solutions in food security and health in arid lands, where the population continues to grow and land and water resources remain severely limited. Such limitations put arid lands at the very forefront of efforts to discover and design sustainable solutions in food security and health that also directly benefit the rest of the world.

Dr. Al Rasheed was presented the Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award by the UA Alumni Association at the 150th Commencement of The University of Arizona on May 17, 2014 in recognition of his “prominent role in agribusiness, his service to the people of the Middle East, and his ongoing commitment to the UA.”

Dr. Al Rasheed earned his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from the UA in 1981. He subsequently received his Master and Ph.D. degrees from universities in Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. He is the Founder and Chairman of Golden Grass Inc., one of the largest agribusinesses in Saudi Arabia, and he also serves as Adjunct Professor in the UA Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.

His Symposium keynote address was titled, “Strategic Agriculture: Making Agriculture Work through Alliances.”
